The 86th in NJveg’s hiking/walking + vegan dining series will start with a relatively easy hike of ~3 miles at the Laurie Chauncey Trail at ETS in Lawrence Township (info, map, and parking directions – GPS coordinates 40.342545, -74.714683).  Note that the trail is reported to get muddy after rain, so please be prepared.  Dining afterward will be at The Mint, for their Princeton Vegan Chef Challenge specials!

NJveg was invited to participate in a program at the Trenton Library, with a focus on living a plant-based life.  We’ll have several speakers covering the basics, their experiences, and reasons to go vegan!


5–course Gourmet Vegan Dinner Catered by Lady and the Shallot

Join NJveg and Vegan in NJ for a catered, gourmet 5course vegan meal!  Lady and the Shallot is a completely vegan, gluten free, and nut free restaurant located inside the Trenton Farmers Market.  Our prior meals here were amazing, among the highlights of the year, and drew raves – including from one NJveg member, “The best meal I’ve ever had!”

$67 (plus a nominal service fee), with a $5 discount for NJveg members (current on dues, contact us for your discount code!  Join NJveg here) and Vegan in NJ Meetup members.  $5 from each ticket purchased will be donated to vegan non-profit Ferrets and Friends Sanctuary.  This event sells out (we’ve had to turn people away), so buy your tickets soon!  Tickets must be purchased in advance, and will NOT be sold at the door.

Volunteer Work Day – Goats of Anarchy

Join NJveg for a volunteer work day!  We’ll be helping out the vegan non-profit sanctuary Goats of Anarchy.  We highly recommend bringing a water bottle, bug spray, sunblock, work gloves, work boots, and clothes that can get dirty.  Please bleach the soles of your footwear. Face mask & hat recommended as well, the Robo area is very dusty.  We’ll be doing a thorough cleaning of Lawson’s barn and Mini Robos area, where many of the disabled goats live.  And of course, a little fun sprinkled in there when the goats try to play with you!  This is a dirty job, prepare to work hard!  If you’d like to donate, you can do so at the sanctuary or online.

Space is limited, adults only.  Please sign up only if you are serious about attending and plan to attend for the full time.  If anything comes up and you need to cancel, let us know ASAP, so that we may fill your spot.  We’ve had a problem with last minute cancellations – don’t be that person!  The address will be provided privately to volunteers before the event.

  • Plant based Toasted PBJ –  Roasted peanut butter and organic strawberry jelly spread on a toasted peanut butter flavored bagel
  • The Vegan S’more – Fresh pressed house-made hazelnut Nutella and marshmallow fluff spread on a chocolate chip bagel topped with crushed graham crackers

The Cubby Hole:

  • Spicy Veggie Wrap – Avocado & hummus with mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach and a spicy garlic drizzle
  • Banana Peanut Butter Toast – Made with crispy wheat toast, natural peanut butter, bananas, walnuts, chia seeds and finished with maple syrup

Plant Based for the Planet
August 1-31

NJveg is collaborating with Planted Society on a Plant Based for the Planet (PBftP) initiative!  PBftP is a city-sponsored initiative highlighting the environmental effects of our food choices.  PBftP is collaborating with locally-owned restaurants in Moorestown to introduce plant-based specials as a way to help the community lower its collective climate impact.  Each restaurant creates at least 2 new plant-based specials that are available the entire month of August.  Participation is free and lots of marketing is included!  At the end of each challenge, PBftP will present a report that highlights the environmental benefits of the initiative, including significant reductions in greenhouse gases and lasting improvements in community food habits. NJveg will be organizing meetups at each of the 8 participating restaurants (Naan Indian Bistro, Moore Bagels, Ryfe Bar & Restaurant, The Cubby Hole, Blue Fig Cafe, Pie Lady Cafe, Luna y Sol, Abandoned Luncheonette), and a couple hikes or walks to accompany these – see below!


Hiking/Walking + Vegan Dining – Passaic County

The 82nd in NJveg’s hiking/walking + vegan dining series will start at vegan restaurant Pappy’s Juice Bar (195 Diamond Bridge Ave, Hawthorne).  If there isn’t parking on Diamond Bridge Avenue, there will be abundant parking on Grand Avenue, the nearest cross street to the east of the restaurant.

Next, drive or walk to the parking lot of Goffle Brook Park located just off of Diamond Bridge Avenue, 0.3 miles to the west of Pappy’s.  (View in Google Maps, GPS coordinates 40.947775, -74.160275).  The shaded picnic tables here are visible from the parking lot.  After a picnic lunch, we can walk through the 8 acre woods and then the walking paths that include some stairs and gentle hills for ~4 miles of walking.  We’ll also stop at the Passaic County Art Center, which is in the park.

About Crystal:  On a personal mission to improve her own health five years ago, Crystal Dickerson after watching What the Health decided to go vegan. Not only did she reverse her health conditions, come off of medicines, lose almost 100 pounds, but she in the heart of Covid decided to study online Forks Over Knives Rouxbe Culinary with a keen interest in plant based whole food cooking. With certifications and a new passion she went on to launching her business Plant Based Planet LLC empowering her community through education and food, she meets folks where they are helping them make healthier swaps to veganize traditional dishes without compromising on taste and culture.

NJveg’s annual member meeting is a chance for us to have a brief meeting to share our ideas and visions for NJveg’s continued success in promoting a vegan lifestyle, discuss upcoming events and initiatives, enjoy a delicious vegan tasting menu with popular items from several vendors, dessert, and more.  Ideas for a fun activity are welcome!  Did we mention food?

Menu:  Hamburger Helper from Plant Based Nut Case; Broccoli & Cheese Potato Patties from Plant Based Planet; Yucca w/Onions in Garlic Sauce from Rosa’s Kitchen; Quinoa, Black Bean, and Steamed Veggie Bowls from Mom’s; and dessert by Lorraine.

Join NJveg for another special 3-course vegan dinner, prepared by The Culinary Arts Center at Rowan College Burlington County students!  These dinners assure the students – future chefs – that providing vegan options is essential.  A gift of a vegan cookbook is made to each student as additional encouragement!  This dinner is open to the public and is already sold out, but we’ve reserved 20 seats, with seatings at 6pm (6 people), 6:15pm (10 people), and 6:45pm (4 people).

Diners will be served the appetizer plate, a choice of an entree, and a choice of dessert.  If you dine with us, please do not order the non-vegan dessert.

Join Vegan in NJ and NJveg for a volunteer work day!  We’ll be helping out the vegan non-profit micro-sanctuary Oscar’s Piggy Oasis.   We highly recommend bringing a water bottle, bug spray, sunblock, work gloves, work boots, and clothes that can get dirty (there’s a lot of mud!).  They’ve been around for over 20 years and specialize in hospice and special-needs pigs.  They also have cats and a turtle.

The sanctuary was devastated by a house fire in 2022.  Fortunately none of the residents were injured, but they’ve been struggling to recover ever since.  We’re hoping to help them get back on track, so we’re returning.  They need lots of supplies for the house and animals.  If you can help in that manner, please reach out to us for details.  If you’d like to donate, you can do so at the sanctuary or online at:

The 73rd in NJveg’s hiking/walking + vegan dining series will start with a 3.8 mile loop walk on a paved trail at Cooper River Park (info & map).  We’ll meet at the west end of the parking lot at 5300 N Park Dr, Pennsauken Township, NJ 08109 (GPS coordinates 39.9276, -75.0667, or 39°55’39.4″N 75°04’00.1″W).  We’ll then head over to vegan restaurant goodbeet (29 Haddon Ave, Westmont (Haddon Township), NJ 08108) for lunch.  Inclement weather date Sunday February 11.

NJveg was asked to participate in a vegan program at the East Brunswick Public Library, with a focus on living a plant-based life (general, changing from non-plant based).  We’ll have several speakers covering the basics, their experiences, and reasons to go vegan!   Programs are typically 45-60 minutes + Q&A.  Come in person or watch online!

The 72nd in NJveg’s hiking/walking + vegan dining series will be our annual New Year’s Day hike.  We’ll do an easy hike at St. Michaels Farm Preserve in Hopewell (info).  We’ll meet at the west parking lot, on Hopewell Princeton Rd (GPS coordinates 40.3836, -74.7545).  Followed by a members-only potluck (see below).  Non-members are welcome on the hike!
