NJveg Prior Events – 2020

Everyone is welcome at NJveg events:  vegan, vegetarian, or veg-curious!  Our events are open to the public, except when noted as members only.

The following is a listing of our previous events from 2020, for reference.  Outreach, volunteer days, and dining events were restricted during the pandemic, but we still managed to have a lot of fun and safe activities!


Socially Distanced, Masked Hike + Takeout – Monmouth County
Sunday December 27, 10am

The thirteenth in our series was at Hartshorne Woods County Park in Highlands & Middletown.  We hiked ~8 miles, followed by takeout from very vegan-friendly Pasquale’s Pizzeria III in Middletown.

Another opportunity just to say hello, or chat for a while.  A favorite topic is “what I’m eating during the pandemic”, but anything relevant is welcome.


Socially Distanced, Masked Hike + Takeout – Salem & Cumberland Counties
Sunday December 13, 10am

The twelfth in our series, a last-minute addition, was at Parvin State Park in Pittsgrove.  We hiked ~8 miles, followed by takeout from Vegans Are Us in Vineland.


Socially Distanced, Masked Walk/Hike + Takeout – Mercer/Hunterdon Counties
Friday November 27, 1pm

The eleventh in our series was at The Watershed Reserve (info) in Pennington.  We hiked between ~1.5 to 5 miles, braving very muddy conditions on some trails.  Our first few choices for takeout were closed, but some of us met for a pre-hike picnic – including food from Basil Bandwagon, a vegan-friendly natural food store in Flemington.


Socially Distanced, Masked Walk/Hike + Takeout – Mercer/Hunterdon/Bucks Counties
Saturday November 21, 1pm
Titusville, NJ, Lambertville, NJ, and New Hope, PA

The tenth in our series started at Washington Crossing State Park (park info) in Titusville.  We hiked ~4 miles, followed by a short hike (~1 mile) at Goat Hill Overlook (info) in Lambertville, and finally got takeout from Spring and Vine, a vegan restaurant in nearby New Hope, PA.

Saturday November 7, 1pm
Mansfield and Bordentown

The ninth in our series was at Crystal Lake Park in Mansfield (view park info).  We hiked between ~1.5 to ~3.5 miles.  Many of us got takeout lunch from vegan-friendly Properly Fueled in Bordentown.

Sunday October 25, 11am
Mountainside/Scotch Plains and Westfield NJ

The eighth in our series was at the Watchung Reservation (view park map), a hike of ~6.5 miles, followed by takeout from Old Town Cafe & Grill in Cranford.  As of this hike, we’ve covered all 8 counties in central NJ!

Beachwood and Toms River NJ

The seventh in our series was at Jakes Branch County Park in Beachwood (view park brochure), a hike of ~4 miles, followed up with takeout from very vegan-friendly Via Roma in Toms River.


Members-only Socially-Distanced Picnic in Raritan Township
Saturday October 3, 1pm

Arnie’s house (address to be provided), Flemington, NJ 08822

Chairs will be available, but please bring everything else you need — all food (vegan of course!), drinks, place settings, and if desired, a small table.  The host is respectfully requesting that children under 12 not be included in this event, and that no shoes be worn in the house (this is an outdoor event, but there is an indoor bathroom).

Saturday September 26, 1pm
Hillsborough/Montgomery & Somerville NJ

The sixth in our series was at Sourland Mountain Preserve in Hillsborough & Montgomery (view park brochure).  Hikers had a choice of a loop of ~6 miles that includes a moderately strenuous climb, or a shorter loop of ~2.5 miles.  Afterward we got takeout from very vegan-friendly Turf Surf & Earth in Somerville.

The fifth in our series was around Manasquan Reservoir in Howell, a loop of ~5 miles (view park brochure).  Afterward we got takeout from 100% vegan restaurant Alternative Plate in Lake Como.

Sunday August 30, 1pm
Piscataway & New Brunswick NJ

The fourth in our series was at Johnson Park in Piscataway.  It’s approx. 4.5 miles roundtrip.  Afterward we got takeout from vegan organic restaurant Veganized in New Brunswick.

Socially Distanced, Masked Walk + Takeout – Mercer County
Saturday August 8, 10am
Lawrence Township & Ewing NJ

Per request, the third in our series was on the Johnson Trolley Line Trail (south segment) that runs from Rider University in Lawrence Township to Ewing.  It’s approx. 2.4 miles one way but we skipped the southernmost 1/2 mile, which is in poor shape.  Afterward we got takeout from the vegan restaurants at the Trenton Farmer’s Market — Lady and the Shallot & Savory Leaf Cafe!

The second in our series was a walk on the paved, approx. 3 mile roundtrip Kinkora Trail in Columbus (just 2 blocks from NJveg’s PO Box).


Socially Distanced, Masked Hike/Walk & Takeout – Hunterdon County
Sunday June 7, noon
2 Race St, Frenchtown NJ 08825

The first in our series was an hour-plus stroll on the Delaware River towpath, followed by takeout from Frenchtown Fresh, which has a 100% plant-based menu.


Vegan Buffet, Meeting, and Skylands Fundraiser
Sunday March 1, Noon-2:30pm.
The Moth Coffeehouse, 42 S Main St, Allentown, NJ 08501

Join NJveg for our first (and brief!) annual meeting.  This will be a chance for us to share our ideas and visions for NJveg’s continued success in promoting a vegan lifestyle.  The Moth Coffeehouse (a vegetarian, vegan-friendly cafe) will be providing a vegan buffet!  Non-members are welcome, but cannot vote.

For each ticket sold, $5 will be donated to Skylands Animal Sanctuary & Rescue!  We raised$200!

  • menu includes dips, bruschetta, salad, mac & cheese (gf), beet burger sliders, Italian wedding cake, peanut butter fudge, coffee, and iced tea
  • free cookbook for at least the first 20 members purchasing tickets
  • contest (TBD) and door prizes
  • an opportunity for you to participate in determining future NJveg activities
  • a vote on NJveg trustees & officers, and on which animal sanctuaries or rescues for which to raise money

Don’t worry, this won’t be one of those long, boring meetings!  And did we mention a vegan buffet?


Vegan Potluck in Princeton

Join NJveg for our first Princeton potluck!  We’ll be meeting in the basement Spiritual Center.  Parking lot and entrance (green “Spiritual Center” sign is next to the entrance; avoid side doors) are in rear of building.  A microwave and refrigerator are available.

Lunch at Inn of the Hawke & Dessert at Caffe Galleria

Join NJveg for lunch at this vegan-friendly restaurant!  They have a separate vegan menu that includes a tofu buffalo wing appetizer, buffalo tofu wrap, house-made veggie burger, portobello sandwich, Impossible Burger, black bean & guacamole wrap, white bean ravioli, and they’ll swap out any of the meats on salads for tofu.  Their vegan chef will have a special soup and entree for us!  Afterward (optional), we’ll walk a few blocks to Caffe Galleria for vegan dessert (from Vegan Treats), coffee, and tea.
